| The view from Charlie and Linda's house |
Monday, May 05, 2014
Happy Cinco de Mayo! Wow, today is the first day of the trip that
has had totally clear skies and it is blinding!
It is 7am and 78 degrees and I bet the temperature will increase
rapidly. Time to slather on more 50
block sun screen!

Well, I am FINALLY
all caught up on the blogs!! This am I
will spend a bit more time with Linda and Charlie, then take a plane to Belize
City, get picked up by a representative from MET (Mountain Equestrian Trails)
for five days of adventure, via horseback, in the steaming jungles. The internet connection (and even power!) will
be very rare, so I may have to do the posts when I get back.

Some of the huge, luscious looking mangos... that won't be ripe for a few more weeks. Darn.

Continuation:
Had a nice visit with Linda and Charlie this am. Then off to the little airport to fly to Belize City International Airport. Giovanni, from MET, picked me up. We had lunch at the restaurant that was the filming location for the Harrison Ford movie, Mosquito Coast. It was about a two hour drive to San Ignacio, stopped for ice cream then went to the Guatemala border to pick up Jackie. She had spent the day at Tikal National Park, exploring the Maya Ruins. She had a fabulous time.
Turns out Jackie and I are the only guests this week. So we are going to be extra pampered! She said she felt like a queen!
An hour later we arrived at Mountain Equestrian Trails. It is up in the mountains along the Slate Creek Valley. It is gorgeous up here! Luckily, not as hot as folks down on the coast led us to believe… but still hot and humid. It was late afternoon when we arrived. Took my bags up to our Cabana (#8) along the slate walkway, through the tropical plants and talking birds and cicadas.
Our cabana is very nice. Jackie and I each have our queen size bed, draped with a mosquito net (although there don’t seem to be mosquitos right now, the flying termite queens are scouting for new home sites). The rooms are lit by kerosene lamps, one by each bed, one on the table and one in the bathroom. The windows are open, closed just means you close shutters. No glass, no screens. Full bath. They provide drinking water, but we do have a shower (with hot water!) and flushing toilet. It is very nice.
We had a wonderful dinner with our hosts and guides. Lasagna, bread, salad and apple pie for dessert. It was beautifully presented and scrumptious!
There is no power up here at the ranch. They have a generator that is on from 8am-4pm for recharging batteries. But we probably won’t be here during that time. Also, that is then only time I can get on the internet. So I will have to try to write these blogs, using just the battery, then try to post… or just wait until I get home!
Off to bed. Early day tomorrow for our first long day of horseback riding adventures!
